CHAPTER 4.3: Sheep
If you have chosen to analyze sheep enterprises, then at some point you will need to enter information about those enterprises in the menu items in the Sheep menu. You may begin to do so upon completion of Setup as well as the relevant General Information menu items all under the Ranch menu.
When you choose Sheep, you will see the following menu:

You may begin entering information regarding the sheep enterprises by selecting one of the menu items in the Sheep menu. See Reports, page 17 or Guide to Reports in the Help for information concerning which menu items need to be completed to receive the various reports.
The Inventory menu item in the Sheep menu allows you to enter information regarding the number and mortality rates for the sheep on the ranch. The first dialog you see when you choose Inventory will be either figure 4.27, figure 4.28 or figure 4.29. The information provided in this first dialog helps establish the starting point for the ewe-lamb enterprise. If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed this first screen will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

If the inventory occurred between lambing and weaning, you will see a dialog like figure 4.27. Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for the rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's and E0's. The mortality rate for rams, mature ewes and E2's refers to the percentage expected to die during the year following the inventory date. For example, if 3 of 100 E2's are expected to die in the year, enter (3) for the Mortality % for E2's.
Under Number enter the total number of rams, mature ewes and E2's present on the inventory date. For mature ewes and E2's also enter the number of the total that are expected to wean a lamb at weaning time. Also enter the number of both ewe lambs and wether lambs that are expected to survive to weaning. For example if there are 94 ewe lambs and 96 wether lambs but you expect 3 deaths from the ewe lambs and 2 deaths from the wether lambs before they are weaned, enter (91) as the number of Ewe lambs and (92) as the number of Wether Lambs.
The values entered for Mortality % and Number for E1's and E0's depends on if the ewes first lamb at one or two years of age.
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age:
If ewes first lamb at one year of age then E0's do not exist; therefore, the space for E0 Mortality % will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. Also, if the ewes first lamb at one year of age and the inventory was taken between weaning and lambing, then at the inventory date E1's are ewe lambs that have not yet been weaned. Therefore, the space for the Total number of E1's will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. Nonetheless, you should still identify the expected Mortality %. It refers to the mortality rate for the replacement ewe lambs between the time of their weaning and the anniversary of the inventory date.
If the ewes first lamb at two years of age:
If the ewes first lamb at two years of age the Total number of E1's refers to the number of E1's present on the inventory date. The Mortality % for E1's refers to the percentage of E1's expected to die during the year following the inventory date. Also if the ewes first lamb at two years of age and the inventory was taken between weaning and lambing, then at the inventory date E0's are ewe lambs that have not yet been weaned. Therefore, there is no space for the Total number of E0's. Nonetheless, you should still identify the expected Mortality % for E0's. It refers to the mortality rate for the replacement ewe lambs between the time of their weaning and the anniversary of the inventory date.

If the inventory occurred between weaning and lambing and the ewes have been pregnancy tested, you will see a dialog like figure 4.28.
Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for the different types of breeding sheep during the year following the inventory date. Under Number enter the total number of rams and E0's present on the inventory date. For mature ewes, E2's and E1's enter both the number thought to be pregnant as well as the number thought to be open (not pregnant) as of the inventory date. If ewes first lamb at one year of age, then E0's do not exist. Therefore, the text E0's will appear "grayed out" and its corresponding spaces should be ignored.
If the inventory occurred between weaning and lambing and the ewes have not been pregnancy tested, you will see a dialog like figure 4.29.

Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for the rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's and E0's for the year following the inventory date. Under Number enter the total number of each type of breeding sheep present on the inventory date. If ewes first lamb at one year of age, then E0's do not exist. Therefore, the text E0's will appear "grayed out" and its corresponding spaces should be ignored.

When you have completed the first dialog and are ready to go on, select the More button. You will then see the second dialog which looks like figure 4.30. The information provided in this dialog helps establish the starting point for five different feeder lamb enterprises. Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for retained ewe feeder lambs and retained wether feeder lambs and for the sheep in the different acquired feeder lamb enterprises. The mortality rate for feeder lambs refers to the percentage expected to die during the time they are held. For example if you expect 4 of 100 sheep in an acquired feeder lamb enterprise to die between when they are purchased and when they are sold, enter (4) for the Mortality %.
Under Number enter the numbers of sheep present within each enterprise on the inventory date that are expected to survive to sale. For example if on the inventory date there are 100 sheep in the enterprise known as acquired feeder lambs 1, but from past experience you expect 96 of them to be alive when they are sold, enter (96) in the space for Number for Acquired Feeder Lambs 1.
If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed, then the retained feeder lamb spaces will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed then the acquired feeder lamb spaces will appear "grayed out." If no feeder lamb enterprises are being analyzed this entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.
The livestock numbers should be greater than or equal to zero and the mortality rates should be between zero and one hundred. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero.
If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in a dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box. The cursor will take the appearance of a question mark (?). You may then move the cursor to any part of the screen you wish to know more about and click on it. A Help window will appear that will give additional information about that subject. For additional assistance using the Help system see page 5. You may also select Glossary in the Help or see the Glossary at the back of the manual for help with definitions of terms.
If you wish to cancel changes made to a dialog choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions in each of the dialogs select the Done buttons. You will then return to the main menu.

When you choose Statistics in the Sheep menu you will see a dialog like figure 4.31. Ranch Vision uses the information provided in this dialog to help predict sheep numbers in future years. First enter the expected Pregnant % for E1's, E2's and mature ewes. The pregnant % is the number pregnant divided by the number exposed to the ram multiplied by 100.
For example if of 100 ewes being bred 90 are expected to become pregnant, the pregnant % would be 90.
The Pregnant % for E1's refers to ewes being bred their first breeding season. The Pregnant % for E2's refers to ewes being bred their second breeding season. The Pregnant % for mature ewes refers to ewes being bred their third or more breeding season. If they are not pregnancy tested enter (100).
Next enter the Weaned % for mature ewes, E2's and E1's. For sheep, the weaned % is the number of ewes weaning a lamb divided by the number of ewes pregnant, multiplied by 100.
For example if 95 of 100 pregnant ewes are expected to wean a lamb, the weaned % would be 95.
The weaned % from the ewes' first breeding season is the Weaned % for E1's. The weaned % from the ewes' second breeding season is the Weaned % for E2's. The weaned % from the ewes' third or later breeding season is the Weaned % for mature ewes. If you do not pregnancy test, the weaned % becomes the number weaning lambs divided by the number exposed for breeding.
The Number Weaned refers to the number of lambs weaned divided by the number of ewes actually weaning live lambs. For example if one hundred ewes wean one hundred fifty lambs, then the number weaned would be 1.5.
The number weaned from ewes in their first breeding season is the Number Weaned for E1's. The number weaned from ewes in their second breeding season is the Number Weaned for E2's. The number weaned from ewes in their third or later breeding season is the Number Weaned for mature ewes. Enter the projected number weaned for E1's, E2's and mature ewes.
Finally enter the Culled % for mature ewes, E2's, E1's, E0's and rams. Culled refers to animals sold for any reason other than being open or dry. Open describes a ewe not pregnant when she should be. Dry describes a ewe failing to wean a live lamb. The culled % is the number of animals culled divided by the total number of animals, multiplied by 100.
The mature ewe culled % refers to the culled % during the year following lambing for ewes having had at least two lambings. The E2's culled % refers to the culled % for breeding ewes during the year following their first lambing. The definition of E1's culled % and the E0's culled % depends on if the ewes first lamb at one or two years of age.
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age:
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age then the E1's culled % refers to the culled % for replacement ewes between their weaning and first lambing. E0's culled % does not exist because E0's do not exist; therefore, this space is "grayed out" and should be ignored.
If the ewes first lamb at two years of age:
If the ewes first lamb at two years of age then the E1's culled % refers to the culled % for breeding ewes for the year preceding their first lambing. The E0's culled % refers to the culled % for replacement ewes between their weaning and first lambing.
The ram culled % reflects the number of years a ram is kept before being replaced. It is calculated as one hundred divided by the average number of years before a breeding ram is replaced. For example, if each ram is replaced after one year, the ram culled % would be (50).
All numbers entered in the Sheep Statistics dialog should be between zero and one hundred. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero. If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.
If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in this dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box.
If you wish to cancel changes made choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions select the Done button. You will then return to the main menu.

When you choose Management in the Sheep menu you will see a dialog like figure 4.32.
Ranch Vision uses the information provided in this dialog to identify how the manager will respond when confronted with various management choices.
First enter the percentage of ewe and wether lambs that will be retained for feeder lamb enterprises. For example if 20 of 100 ewe lambs are to be kept at weaning to create a retained ewe feeder lamb enterprise, then (20) would be the % Retained for Feeder lambs under E.lambs.
If feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed, these two questions will be "grayed out" and should be ignored.
Also enter the percentage of ewe lambs that will be kept as breeding replacements. For example if 15 of 50 ewe lambs are to be kept at weaning as breeding replacements then enter (30) as the % retained for breeding replacements.
Of course, the percentage of ewe lambs retained as feeder lambs plus the percentage of ewe lambs kept as breeding replacements can never be greater than 100.
The next questions concern what will be done with open ewes. Enter the percentage of open E1's, open E2's and open mature ewes that will be sold. Open E1's refer to ewes that are not pregnant following their first breeding season. Open E2's refer to ewes that are not pregnant following their second breeding season. Open mature ewes refer to ewes that are not pregnant following their third or later breeding season. For example if all open ewes within a class are to be sold, enter (100). If half the open ewes will be sold, enter (50), etc...
The last spaces concern what will be done with ewes that are dry (fail to wean a lamb). Enter the percentage of dry E1's, E2's and mature ewes that will be sold. For example if all dry E2's are to be sold, enter (100). If none will be sold, enter (0), etc...
All numbers entered in the Sheep Management Statistics should be between zero and one hundred. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero. If a ewe- lamb enterprise is not being analyzed this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.
If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in this dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box.
If you wish to cancel changes that you made choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions select the Done button. You will then return to the main menu.
The Purchases menu item in the Sheep menu allows you to enter information regarding future sheep purchases. The first dialog you see when you choose Purchases will look like figure 4.33.
The upper box concerns future purchases of breeding sheep. Under the column heading Price/Head enter the expected purchase price per animal during the year following the inventory date for rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's and E0's. These descriptions refer to the animal's status at the time of purchase. Under Number enter the number of mature ewes, E2's, E1's, and E0's to be purchased in the year following the inventory date. Ranch Vision does not ask for the number of rams to be purchased because it automatically calculates this number in order to maintain the same ewe to ram ratio in future years as is present on the inventory date. Next select the month of the year that purchases will take place for each type of sheep.
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age the spaces concerning E0's will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed then all of the spaces in the upper box will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

The lower box concerns future purchases of sheep for the acquired feeder lamb enterprises. Under the column heading Price/lb(or kg) enter the expected purchase price per unit weight for the sheep coming into the acquired feeder lamb enterprises during the year following the inventory date. Under Weight enter the weight at purchase for the sheep coming into the acquired feeder lamb enterprises. Under Number enter the number of sheep coming into each of the acquired feeder lamb enterprises during the year following the inventory date. Also select the month of the year that purchases are to take place for these sheep.
If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed the lower box will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

When you are ready to go on, select the More button. If the inventory was taken between weaning and lambing the second dialog will be like figure 4.34. Otherwise it will be like figure 4.35.
For Sheep Purchases Sec. 2 (Weaning and Lambing) indicate in the upper box when mature ewes, E2's and E1's will be purchased relative to the inventory date. Will they be purchased before lambing, between lambing and weaning or after weaning. For E0's indicate if the purchases will be made before or after lambing.
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age, E0's will appear "grayed out' and should be ignored. If a ewe lamb enterprise is not being analyzed then the upper box will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.
In the lower box indicate if the sheep in the acquired feeder lamb enterprises which are to be purchased in the year following the inventory date will also be sold within the year following the inventory date. For example, if the inventory was taken in February and sheep for an acquired feeder lamb enterprise are purchased in April, select (yes) if these animals are sold before the following February and (no) if they are sold after the following February. In a similar manner indicate if sheep in the retained feeder lamb enterprises are sold within one year following the inventory date of the year during which they are weaned. For example if the inventory is taken in March and the lambs are to be weaned in June and some of the wethers will be retained for a retained wether feeder lamb enterprise, select (yes) if these wether feeder lambs are to be sold before the following March and (no) if they are not.
If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed then questions concerning acquired feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed or if feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed then questions concerning retained feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" questions.
If the inventory occurred between lambing and weaning, the second dialog will be like figure 4.35.

For Sheep Purchases Sec. 2 (Lambing and Weaning), indicate in the upper box when mature ewes, E2's and E1's will be purchased relative to the inventory date. Will they be purchased before weaning, between weaning and lambing or after lambing. For E0's indicate if the purchases will be made before or after weaning.
For example, if the inventory was taken in June and sheep for an acquired feeder lamb enterprise are purchased in March, select (yes) if these animals are sold before the following June and (no) if they are sold after the following June. In a similar manner indicate if sheep in the retained feeder lamb enterprises are sold within one year following the inventory date of the year during which they are weaned. For example if the inventory is taken in May and the lambs are to be weaned in June and some of the wethers will be retained for a retained wether feeder lamb enterprise, select (yes) if these wether feeder lambs are to be sold before the following May and (no) if they are not.
When you have completed the second dialog and are ready to go on, select the More button. You will then see the third dialog which looks like figure 4.36.

Indicate here if purchased mature ewes, E2's or E1's are confirmed pregnant at the time of purchase. Unless the mature ewes, E2's or E1's are purchased between weaning and lambing, the question will appear "grayed out." If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed this dialog will be "grayed out." Again ignore all "grayed out" questions.
All numbers entered in the Purchases dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

The Sheep Sales menu item in the Sheep menu allows you to enter information regarding future sheep sales. The first dialog you see when you choose Sheep Sales will look like figure 4.37. This dialog asks a question concerning animals entering the various sheep enterprises during the year following the inventory date. Specifically it asks you to indicate which sheep will be shorn between entering an enterprise and the anniversary of the inventory date. This is important information for projecting total wool production during the year because some animals may arrive at the ranch having already been shorn while others might arrive and be ready to be shorn with the rest of the flock. Check each type of animal that will enter the flock and be shorn during the year following the inventory date.
When you have completed this dialog, select the More button. You will then be presented with a second dialog like figure 4.38.

This dialog concerns sales of sheep from the ewe-lamb enterprise. For each type of sheep listed including cull rams, dry mature ewes, open mature ewes, cull mature ewes, dry E2's, open E2's, cull E2's, dry E1's, open E1's, cull E1's, cull E0's, ewe lambs and wether lambs, select the month during which they will be sold. Under the column heading Weight enter the expected weight at the time of sale. Under the column heading Price/lb(or kg) enter the expected sales price per unit weight at the time of sale in the year following the inventory date. Ranch Vision automatically projects how many of each type of animal will be sold.
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age the spaces concerning E0's will appear "grayed out." Also if the inventory is taken between lambing and weaning, E1's will not be old enough to wean lambs within one year of the inventory date; therefore Dry E1's do not exist and the corresponding spaces will appear "grayed out." If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed then the entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.
When you are ready to go on, select the More button. A third dialog like figure 4.39 will appear.

This dialog concerns sales of sheep from the feeder lamb enterprises. For each type of sheep listed including retained ewe feeder lambs, retained wether feeder lambs, acquired feeder lamb 1 sheep, acquired feeder lamb 2 sheep and acquired feeder lamb 3 sheep, select the month during which they will be sold. Under the column heading Weight enter the expected weight at the time of sale. Under the column heading Price/lb (or kg) enter the expected sales price per unit of weight at the time of sale in the year following the inventory date. Ranch Vision automatically projects how many of each type of animal will be sold.
All numbers entered in the Sales dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

The Wool Sales menu item in the Sheep menu allows you to enter information regarding future wool sales. The first dialog you see when you choose Wool Sales will look like figure 4.40.
First enter information concerning wool production for the breeding sheep that are not being sold during the year following the inventory date. These include rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's, E0's and weaned replacement ewes. For each type select the month during which their wool will be sold; under the column heading Weight enter the average expected fleece, and under the column heading Price/lb(or kg) enter the expected wool price per unit weight at the time of sale in the year following the inventory date.
Next enter the Month, Weight and Price information for wool from sheep that will be sold during the year following the inventory date including cull rams, dry mature ewes, open mature ewes, cull mature ewes, dry E2's, open E2's and cull E2's. If any of these sheep will be sold without being shorn, you should leave their accompanying spaces blank.
If the ewes first lamb at one year of age then E0's do not exist; their corresponding spaces will appear "grayed out." If a ewe lamb enterprise is not being analyzed the entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.
When you are ready to go on, select the More button. A second dialog like figure 4.41 will appear.
This dialog requests information about wool production from dry E1's, open E1's, cull E1's, cull E0's, ewe lambs, wether lambs, retained ewe feeder lambs, retained wether feeder lambs, acquired feeder lambs 1, acquired feeder lambs 2 and acquired feeder lambs 3. Enter the Month, Weight and Price information for wool produced by these sheep in the year following the inventory date. If any of these sheep will be sold without being shorn, you should leave their accompanying spaces blank.
If the inventory is taken between lambing and weaning, E1's will not be old enough to wean lambs within one year of the inventory date; therefore Dry E1's do not exist and will appear "grayed out." If the ewes first lamb at two years of age, E0's will appear "grayed out." If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed then all spaces except those corresponding to the acquired feeder lamb enterprises be "grayed out." If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed then their spaces will be "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.
All numbers entered in the Wool Sales dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

The Grazing menu item in the Sheep menu allows you to enter information used to calculate the sheep grazing requirements. The first dialog you see when you choose Grazing will look like figure 4.42.
The questions in this dialog concern sheep in the ewe-lamb enterprise. First identify whether these sheep are small-framed, medium-framed or large-framed. Small frame sheep, medium frame sheep and large frame sheep are those that would produce mature rams weighing approximately 105 kg ( 231 lbs), 115 kg (253 lbs) and 125 kg (275 lbs) respectively.
Next identify the month that the breeding season begins for the ewe-lamb enterprise.
Finally enter the average weights during the year for rams, mature ewes and E2's. In addition enter the equivalent number of months during the year that animals are provided supplemental feed at levels meeting their maintenance energy needs. In other words, identify the amount of supplemental feed provided to each animal as measured by that animals' average monthly maintenance energy requirements. This is done for the rams, mature ewes and E2's present on the inventory date as well as for those to be purchased during the year. For example if each ram is provided supplemental feed meeting its maintenance energy requirements for two months during the year, enter (2) in the space provided for rams. If during the year following the inventory date, each purchased E2 is provided supplemental feed at one half its maintenance energy requirements for a period of three months, enter (1.5) in the space provided for purchased E2's.
If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed, this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.
When you are ready to go on, select the More button. A second dialog like figure 4.43 will appear.
In Sheep Grazing Demands Sec. 2 enter the average weights of E1's and E0's on the inventory date. Also enter the equivalent number of months that E1's, purchased E1's, E0's, purchased E0's, weaned replacement ewes, ewe lambs and wether lambs are provided supplemental feed at levels meeting their maintenance energy needs during the year following the inventory date.
If ewes first lamb at one year of age the text E0's and Purchased E0's will appear "grayed out", and their corresponding spaces should be ignored.
Also enter the equivalent number of months that retained ewe feeder lambs and retained wether feeder lambs are provided supplemental feed at levels meeting their maintenance energy requirements between being weaned and being sold. For example if retained ewe feeder lambs are feed half their maintenance energy requirements for two months between when they enter the retained ewe feeder lamb enterprise at weaning and when they are later sold, enter (1).
Finally in the lower box enter the frame size and the months fed for the sheep in each of the acquired feeder lamb enterprises from when they are purchased to when they are sold..

If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed the spaces corresponding to E1's, E0's, weaned replacement ewes, lambs and retained feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." If feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed, questions for retained feeder lambs and acquired feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed, their corresponding spaces will be "grayed out." Ignore any "grayed out" areas.
All numbers entered in the Grazing dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.
When you choose Inventory Appraisal in the Sheep menu you will see a dialog like figure 4.44.
The information provided in this dialog forms the basis by which Ranch Vision determines the value of the sheep inventory at the beginning and end of each period. This is necessary when using accrual based accounting methods for the ranch business. For each type of sheep listed enter the average market value per animal on the inventory date.
If the ewes lamb at one year of age then E0's will be "grayed out"; if a ewe- lamb enterprise is not being analyzed then the spaces corresponding to rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's, E0's, lambs and retained feeder lambs will appear "grayed out"; if the inventory was taken between weaning and lambing then the spaces for ewe lambs and wether lambs will appear "grayed out"; if feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed, questions for retained feeder lambs and acquired feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed, their corresponding spaces will be "grayed out." Ignore any "grayed out" areas.

All numbers entered in the Inventory Appraisal dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero.
If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in this dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box.
If you wish to cancel changes made to the dialog choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions select the Done button. You will then return to the main menu.

When you choose the Direct Costs menu item under the Sheep menu, you are given a choice of two sub-menus, Simplified and Detailed. You may complete either. The Simplified sub-menu has a less detailed list of questions regarding ewe-lamb enterprise direct costs. However, completing the Detailed sub-menu may produce a more accurate projection. If you choose Simplified, you will first see a dialog like figure 4.45.
Enter the average expected direct costs that are paid in the form of cash for each breeding animal in the ewe-lamb enterprise for the year following the inventory. This could be calculated as the total of all ewe-lamb enterprise cash direct costs divided by the average total number of rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's, E0's and weaned replacement ewes.
Next enter the average expected non-cash direct costs for each breeding animal in the ewe-lamb enterprise for the year following the inventory. This could be calculated as the total of all ewe-lamb enterprise non-cash direct costs, excluding the opportunity cost of investing in these sheep which is automatically calculated and included by Ranch Vision, divided by the average total number of rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's, E0's and weaned replacement ewes. (See Opportunity Costs, page 188).
Finally indicate if either the cash or non-cash direct costs listed include grazing fees for rams, E1's, E0's or weaned replacement ewes. Ranch Vision uses that information when calculating replacement ewe costs. (See Replacement Costs, page 196).
If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed, this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.
If instead of Simplified you chose the Detailed sub-menu, you would first see a dialog like figure 4.46. This dialog permits a detailed listing of the direct costs for the breeding animals within the ewe-lamb enterprise. First enter the average expected cash direct costs for each ram, mature ewe, E2, E1, E0 and weaned replacement ewe for the year following the inventory. This is calculated by dividing the cash direct costs for a particular type of sheep during the year by the average number of that type of sheep.
Secondly enter the average expected direct costs that are not paid in the form of cash for rams, mature ewes, E2's, E1's, E0's and weaned replacement ewes for the year following the inventory. This is calculated by dividing the non-cash direct costs for a particular type of sheep during the year, excluding the opportunity cost of investing in these sheep which is automatically calculated and included by Ranch Vision, by the average number of that type of sheep. (See Opportunity Costs, page 188).
Finally for the rams, E1's, E0's and weaned replacement ewes indicate if either the cash or non-cash direct costs listed include grazing fees. Ranch Vision uses this information when calculating replacement ewe costs. (See Replacement Costs, page 196).

If ewes first lamb at one year of age the questions regarding E0's will appear "grayed out." If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed, this dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore all "grayed out" areas.
Ranch Vision calculates using the last Direct Costs sub-menu in which you selected the Done button. When you are ready to go on, choose the More button. A second dialog like figure 4.47 will appear.

This dialog requests information about the direct costs for the various feeder lamb enterprises. For each enterprise being analyzed enter the average expected cash direct costs per head during the time the sheep are in that enterprise. Also enter the average expected non-cash direct costs per head, excluding the opportunity cost of investing in these sheep which is automatically calculated and included by Ranch Vision, during the time the sheep are in that enterprise. (See Opportunity Costs, page 188).
Finally indicate if either the cash or non-cash direct costs listed include grazing fees. Ranch Vision uses this information when calculating break-even values. (See Break-Even Values, page 42)
If a ewe-lamb enterprise is not being analyzed, then questions concerning retained feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed then questions concerning acquired feeder lambs will appear "grayed out." If feeder lamb enterprises are not being analyzed this entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Please ignore all "grayed out" questions.
All numbers entered in the Direct Costs dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.
For additional assistance using the Help system see 5. You may also select Glossary in the Help or see the Glossary at the back of the manual for help with definitions of terms.
If you wish to cancel changes made to the dialog choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions in each of the dialogs select the Done buttons. You will then return to the main menu.
