CHAPTER 4.4: Goats

GOATS MENU

If you have chosen to analyze goat enterprises, then at some point you will need to enter information about those enterprises in the menu items in the Goats menu. You may begin to do so upon completion of Setup as well as the relevant General Information menu items all under the Ranch menu. When you choose Goats, you will see the following menu:

You may begin entering information regarding the goat enterprises by selecting one of the menu items in the Goats menu. See page Reports, page 17 or Guide in the Help for information concerning which menu items need to be completed to receive the various reports.

INVENTORY

The Inventory menu item in the Goats menu allows you to enter information regarding the number and mortality rates for the goats on the ranch. The first dialog you see when you choose Inventory will be either figure 4.48, figure 4.49 or figure 4.50.The information provided in this first dialog helps establish the starting point for the doe-kid enterprise. If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed this first screen will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

Figure 4.48 Goat Inventory & Mortality Sec. 1 (Kidding and Weaning)

If the inventory occurred between kidding and weaning, you will see a dialog like figure 4.48. Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for the billies, mature does, D2's, D1's and D0's. The mortality rate for billies, mature does and D2's refers to the percentage expected to die during the year following the inventory date. For example, if 3 of 100 D2's are expected to die in the year, enter (3) for the Mortality % for D2's.

3 (deaths in the year) / 100 (number of D2s) = 3 (Mortality %)

Under Number enter the total number of billies, mature does and D2's present on the inventory date. For mature does and D2's also enter the number of the total that are expected to wean a kid at weaning time. Also enter the number of both doe kids and wether kids that are expected to survive to weaning. For example if there are 94 doe kids and 96 wether kids but you expect 3 deaths from the doe kids and 2 deaths from the wether kids before they are weaned, enter (91) as the number of Doe kids and (92) as the number of Wether Kids.

The values entered for Mortality % and Number for D1's and D0's depends on if the does first kid at one or two years of age.

If the does first kid at one year of age:

If does first kid at one year of age then D0's do not exist; therefore, the space for D0 Mortality % will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. Also, if the does first kid at one year of age and the inventory was taken between weaning and kidding, then at the inventory date D1's are doe kids that have not yet been weaned. Therefore, the space for the Total number of D1's will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. Nonetheless, you should still identify the expected Mortality % for D1's. It refers to the mortality rate for the replacement doe kids between the time of their weaning and the anniversary of the inventory date.

If the does first kid at two years of age:

If the does first kid at two years of age the Total number of D1's refers to the D1's present on the inventory date. The Mortality % for D1's refers to the percentage of D1's expected to die during the year following the inventory date. Also if the does first kid at two years of age and the inventory was taken between weaning and kidding, then at the inventory date D0's are doe kids that have not yet been weaned. Therefore, there is no space for the Total number of D0's. Nonetheless, you should still identify the expected Mortality % for D0's. It refers to the mortality rate for the replacement doe kids between the time of their weaning and the anniversary of the inventory date.

Figure 4.49 Goat Inventory and Mortality Sec. 1 (Wean and Kid:Tested)

If the inventory occurred between weaning and kidding and the does have been pregnancy tested, you will see a dialog like figure 4.49.

Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for the different types of breeding goats during the year following the inventory date. Under Number enter the total number of billies and D0's present on the inventory date. For mature does, D2's and D1's enter both the number thought to be pregnant as well as the number thought to be open (not pregnant) as of the inventory date. If does first kid at one year of age, then D0's do not exist. Therefore, the text D0's will appear "grayed out" and its corresponding spaces should be ignored.

If the inventory occurred between weaning and kidding and the does have not been pregnancy tested, you will see a dialog like figure 4.50.

Figure 4.50 Goat Inventory and Mortality Sec. 1 (Wean and Kid: Not Tested)

Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for the billies, mature does, D2's, D1's and D0's for the year following the inventory date. Under Number enter the total number of each type of breeding goats present on the inventory date. If does first kid at one year of age, then D0's do not exist. Therefore, the text D0's will appear "grayed out" and its corresponding spaces should be ignored.

Figure 4.51 Goat Inventory and Mortality Sec. 2

When you have completed the first dialog and are ready to go on, select the More button. You will then see the second dialog which looks like figure 4.51. The information provided in this dialog helps establish the starting point for five different feeder kid enterprises. Under Mortality % enter the expected mortality rate for retained doe feeder kids and retained wether feeder kids and for the goats in the different acquired feeder kid enterprises. The mortality rate for feeder kids refers to the percentage expected to die during the time they are held. For example if you expect 4 of 100 goats in an acquired feeder kid enterprise to die between when they are purchased and when they are sold, enter (4) for the Mortality %.

4 deaths / 100 ( feeder kids) = 4 (Mortality %)

Under Number enter the numbers of goats present within each enterprise on the inventory date that are expected to survive to sale. For example if on the inventory date there are 100 goats in the enterprise known as acquired feeder kids 1, but from past experience you expect 96 of them to be alive when they are sold, enter (96) in the space for Number for Acquired Feeder Kids 1.

If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed, then the retained feeder kid spaces will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed then the acquired feeder kid spaces will appear "grayed out." If no feeder kid enterprises are being analyzed this entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.

The livestock numbers should be greater than or equal to zero and the mortality rates should be between zero and one hundred. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero.

If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in a dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box. The cursor will take the appearance of a question mark (?). You may then move the cursor to any part of the screen you wish to know more about and click on it. A Help window will appear that will give additional information about that subject. For additional assistance using the Help system see page 5. You may also select Glossary in the Help or see the Glossary at the back of the manual for help with definitions of terms.

If you wish to cancel changes made to a dialog choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions in each of the dialogs select the Done buttons. You will then return to the main menu.

Figure 4.52 Goat Flock Statistics

STATISTICS

When you choose Statistics in the Goats menu you will see a dialog like figure 4.52. Ranch Vision uses the information provided in this dialog to help predict goat numbers in future years. First enter the expected Pregnant % for D1's, D2's and mature does. The pregnant % is the number pregnant divided by the number exposed to the billy multiplied by 100.

Pregnant % = (number pregnant ÷ number bred) x 100

For example if of 100 does being bred 90 are expected to become pregnant, the pregnant % would be 90.

90 = (90 pregnant does ÷ 100 exposed does) x 100

The Pregnant % for D1's refers to does being bred their first breeding season. The Pregnant % for D2's refers to does being bred their second breeding season. The Pregnant % for mature does refers to does being bred their third or more breeding season. If they are not pregnancy tested enter (100).

Next enter the Weaned % for mature does, D2's and D1's. For goats, the weaned % is the number of does weaning a kid divided by the number of does pregnant, multiplied by 100.

Weaned % = (number weaning kids ÷ number pregnant) x 100

For example if 95 of 100 pregnant does are expected to wean a kid, the weaned % would be 95.

95 = (95 does weaning kids ÷ 100 pregnant does) x 100

The weaned % from the does' first breeding season is the Weaned % for D1's. The weaned % from the does' second breeding season is the Weaned % for D2's. The weaned % from the does' third or later breeding season is the Weaned % for mature does. If you do not pregnancy test, the weaned % becomes the number weaning kids divided by the number exposed for breeding.

The Number Weaned refers to the number of kids weaned divided by the number of does actually weaning live kids. For example if one hundred does wean one hundred fifty kids, then the number weaned would be 1.5.

Number Weaned = Number of Kids Weaned ÷ Number of Does weaning Kids

The number weaned from does in their first breeding season is the Number Weaned for D1's. The number weaned from does in their second breeding season is the Number Weaned for D2's. The number weaned from does in their third or later breeding season is the Number Weaned for mature does. Finally enter the Culled % for mature does, D2's, D1's, D0's and billies. Culled refers to animals sold for any reason other than being open or dry. Open describes a doe not pregnant when she should be. Dry describes a doe failing to wean a live kid. The culled % is the number of animals culled divided by the total number of animals, multiplied by 100.

Culled % = (number culled ÷ total number) x 100

The mature does culled % refers to the culled % during the year following kidding for does having had at least two kiddings. The D2's culled % refers to the culled % for breeding does during the year following their first kidding. The definition of D1's culled % and the D0's culled % depends on if the does first kid at one or two years of age.

If the does first kid at one year of age:

If the does first kid at one year of age then the D1's culled % refers to the culled % for replacement does between their weaning and first kidding. D0's culled does not exist because D0's do not exist; therefore, this space is "grayed out" and should be ignored.

If the does first kid at two years of age:

If the does first kid at two years of age then the D1's culled % refers to the culled % for breeding does for the year preceding their first kidding. The D0's culled % refers to the culled % for replacement does between their weaning and first kidding.

The billy culled % reflects the number of years a billy is kept before being replaced. It is calculated as one hundred divided by the average number of years before a breeding billy is replaced. For example, if each billy is replaced after one year, the billy culled % would be (50).

50 = 100 ÷ 2 years of breeding life

All numbers entered in the Goat Statistics dialog should be between zero and one hundred. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero. If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in this dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box.

If you wish to cancel changes made choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions select the Done button. You will then return to the main menu.

Figure 4.53 Goat Management Statistics

MANAGEMENT

When you choose Management in the Goats menu you will see a dialog like figure 4.53. Ranch Vision uses the information provided in this dialog to identify how the manager will respond when confronted with various management choices. First enter the percentage of doe and wether kids that will be retained for feeder kid enterprises. For example if 20 of 100 doe kids are to be kept at weaning to create a retained doe feeder kid enterprise, then (20) would be the % Retained for Feeder kids under E.kids.

20 = (20 retained for feeder kids ÷ 100 total doe kids) x 100

If feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed, these two questions will be "grayed out" and should be ignored. Also enter the percentage of doe kids that will be kept as breeding replacements. For example if 15 of 50 doe kids are to be kept at weaning as breeding replacements then enter (30) as the % retained for breeding replacements.

30 = (15 retained for breeding replacements ÷ 50 total doe kids) x 100

Of course, the percentage of doe kids retained as feeder kids plus the percentage of doe kids kept as breeding replacements can never be greater than 100.

The next questions concern what will be done with open does. Enter the percentage of open D1's, open D2's and open mature does that will be sold. Open D1's refer to does that are not pregnant following their first breeding season. Open D2's refer to does that are not pregnant following their second breeding season. Open mature does refer to does that are not pregnant following their third or later breeding season. For example if all open does within a class are to be sold, enter (100). If half the open does will be sold, enter (50), etc...

The last spaces concern what will be done with does that are dry (fail to wean a kid). Enter the percentage of dry D1's, D2's and mature does that will be sold. For example if all dry D2's are to be sold, enter (100). If none will be sold, enter (0), etc...

All numbers entered in the Goat Management Statistics should be between zero and one hundred. Ranch Vision assumes blank spaces are zero. If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

If at any point you need additional information about the questions being asked in this dialog, click on the Help button on the dialog box.

If you wish to cancel changes that you made choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions select the Done button. You will then return to the main menu.

PURCHASES

The Purchases menu item in the Goats menu allows you to enter information regarding future goat purchases. The first dialog you see when you choose Purchases will look like figure 4.54.

The upper box concerns future purchases of breeding goats. Under the column heading Price/Head enter the expected purchase price per animal during the year following the inventory date for billies, mature does, D2's, D1's and D0's. These descriptions refer to the animal's status at the time of purchase. Under Number enter the number of mature does, D2's, D1's, and D0's to be purchased in the year following the inventory date. Ranch Vision does not ask for the number of billies to be purchased because it automatically calculates this number in order to maintain the same doe to billy ratio in future years as is present on the inventory date. Next select the month of the year that purchases will take place for each type of goats.

If the does first kid at one year of age the spaces concerning D0's will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed then all of the spaces in the upper box will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

Figure 4.54 Goat Purchases Sec. 1

The lower box concerns future purchases of goats for the acquired feeder kid enterprises. Under the column heading Price/lb(or kg) enter the expected purchase price per unit weight for the goats coming into the acquired feeder kid enterprises during the year following the inventory date. Under Weight enter the weight at purchase for the goats coming into the acquired feeder kid enterprises. Under Number enter the number of goats coming into each of the acquired feeder kid enterprises during the year following the inventory date. Also select the month of the year that purchases are to take place for these goats.

If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed the lower box will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

Figure 4.55 Goat Purchases Sec. 2 (Weaning and Kidding)

When you are ready to go on, select the More button. If the inventory was taken between weaning and kidding the second dialog will be like figure 4.55. Otherwise it will be like figure 4.56.

For Goat Purchases Sec. 2 (Weaning and Kidding), indicate in the upper box when mature does, D2's and D1's will be purchased relative to the inventory date. Will they be purchased before kidding, between kidding and weaning or after weaning. For D0's indicate if the purchases will be made before or after kidding. If the does first kid at one year of age, D0's will appear "grayed out' and should be ignored.

If a doe kid enterprise is not being analyzed then the upper box will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored. In the lower box indicate if the goats in the acquired feeder kid enterprises which are to be purchased in the year following the inventory date will also be sold within the year following the inventory date. For example, if the inventory was taken in February and goats for an acquired feeder kid enterprise are purchased in April, select (yes) if these animals are sold before the following February and (no) if they are sold after the following February. In a similar manner indicate if goats in the retained feeder kid enterprises are sold within one year following the inventory date of the year during which they are weaned. For example if the inventory is taken in March and the kids are to be weaned in June and some of the wethers will be retained for a retained wether feeder kid enterprise, select (yes) if these wether feeder kids are to be sold before the following March and (no) if they are not.

If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed then questions concerning acquired feeder kids will appear "grayed out." If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed or if feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed then questions concerning retained feeder kids will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" questions.

If the inventory occurred between kidding and weaning, the second dialog will be like figure 4.56.

For Goat Purchases Sec. 2 (Kidding and Weaning) indicate in the upper box when mature does, D2's and D1's will be purchased relative to the inventory date. Will they be purchased before weaning, between weaning and kidding or after kidding. For D0's indicate if the purchases will be made before or after weaning.

For example, if the inventory was taken in June and goats for an acquired feeder kid enterprise are purchased in March, select (yes) if these animals are sold before the following June and (no) if they are sold after the following June. In a similar manner indicate if goats in the retained feeder kid enterprises are sold within one year following the inventory date of the year during which they are weaned. For example if the inventory is taken in May and the kids are to be weaned in June and some of the wethers will be retained for a retained wether feeder kid enterprise, select (yes) if these wether feeder kids are to be sold before the following May and (no) if they are not.

Figure 4.56 Goat Purchases Sec. 2 (Kidding and Weaning)

When you have completed the second dialog and are ready to go on, select the More button. You will then see the third dialog which looks like figure 4.57.

Figure 4.57 Goat Purchases Sec. 3

Indicate here if purchased mature does, D2's or D1's are confirmed pregnant at the time of purchase. Unless the mature does, D2's or D1's are purchased between weaning and kidding, the question will appear "grayed out." If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed this dialog will be "grayed out." Again ignore all "grayed out" questions.

All numbers entered in the Purchases dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

Figure 4.58 Goat Sales Sec. 1

GOAT SALES

The Goat Sales menu item in the Goats menu allows you to enter information regarding future goat sales. The first dialog you see when you choose Goat Sales will look like figure 4.58.

This dialog asks a question concerning animals entering the various goat enterprises during the year following the inventory date. Specifically it asks you to indicate which goats will be shorn between entering an enterprise and the anniversary of the inventory date. This is important information for projecting total mohair production during the year because some animals may arrive at the ranch having already been shorn while others might arrive and be ready to be shorn with the rest of the flock. Check each type of animal that will enter the flock and be shorn during the year following the inventory date.

Figure 4.59 Goat Sales Sec. 2

When you have completed this dialog, select the More button. You will then be presented with a second dialog like figure 4.59. This dialog concerns sales of goats from the doe-kid enterprise. For each type of goats listed including cull billies, dry mature does, open mature does, cull mature does, dry D2's, open D2's, cull D2's, dry D1's, open D1's, cull D1's, cull D0's, doe kids and wether kids, select the month during which they will be sold. Under the column heading Weight enter the expected weight at the time of sale. Under the column heading Price/lb(or kg) enter the expected sales price per unit weight at the time of sale in the year following the inventory date. Ranch Vision automatically projects how many of each type of animal will be sold.

Figure 4.60 Goat Sales Sec. 3

If the does first kid at one year of age the spaces concerning D0's will appear "grayed out." Also if the inventory is taken between kidding and weaning, D1's will not be old enough to wean kids within one year of the inventory date; therefore Dry D1's do not exist and the corresponding spaces will appear "grayed out." If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed then the entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.

When you are ready to go on, select the More button. A third dialog like figure 4.60 will appear. This dialog concerns sales of goats from the feeder kid enterprises. For each type of goats listed including retained doe feeder kids, retained wether feeder kids, acquired feeder kids 1, acquired feeder kids 2 and acquired feeder kids 3, select the month during which they will be sold. Under the column heading Weight enter the expected weight at the time of sale. Under the column heading Price/lb (or kg) enter the expected sales price per unit of weight at the time of sale in the year following the inventory date. Ranch Vision automatically projects how many of each type of animal will be sold.

All numbers entered in the Sales dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

First enter information concerning mohair production for the breeding goats that are not being sold during the year following the inventory date. These include billies, mature does, D2's, D1's, D0's and weaned replacement does. For each type select the month during which their mohair will be sold; under the column heading Weight enter the average expected fleece, and under the column heading Price/lb(or kg) enter the expected mohair price per unit weight at the time of sale in the year following the inventory date.

Next enter the Month, Weight and Price information for mohair from goats that will be sold during the year following the inventory date including cull billies, dry mature does, open mature does, cull mature does, dry D2's, open D2's and cull D2's. If any of these goats will be sold without being shorn, you should leave their accompanying spaces blank.

If the does first kid at one year of age then D0's do not exist; their corresponding spaces will appear "grayed out." If a doe kid enterprise is not being analyzed the entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.

When you are ready to go on, select the More button. A second dialog like figure 4.62 will appear.

This dialog requests information about mohair production from dry D1's, open D1's, cull D1's, cull D0's, doe kids, wether kids, retained doe feeder kids, retained wether feeder kids, acquired feeder kids 1, acquired feeder kids 2 and acquired feeder kids 3. Enter the Month, Weight and Price information for mohair produced by these goats in the year following the inventory date. If any of these goats will be sold without being shorn, you should leave their accompanying spaces blank.

If the inventory is taken between kidding and weaning, D1's will not be old enough to wean kids within one year of the inventory date; therefore Dry D1's do not exist and will appear "grayed out." If the does first kid at two years of age, D0's will appear "grayed out." If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed then all spaces except those corresponding to the acquired feeder kid enterprises be "grayed out." If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed then their spaces will be "grayed out." Ignore "grayed out" areas.

All numbers entered in the mohair Sales dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

Figure 4.62 Mohair Sales Sec. 2

GRAZING

Figure 4.63 Goat Grazing Demands Sec. 1

The Grazing menu item in the Goats menu allows you to enter information used to calculate the goat grazing requirements. The first dialog you see when you choose Grazing will look like figure 4.63.

The questions in this dialog concern goats in the doe-kid enterprise. First identify whether the does exhibit average milking ability, above average milking abiltiy or superior milking ability. Does with average milking ability, above average milking ability and superior milking ability are defined as those producing 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs), 3.0 kg (6.6lbs) and 4.5 kg (9.9 lbs) respectively of 4.0% butterfat milk per day during a 12 week lactation.

Next identify the month that the breeding season begins for the doe-kid enterprise.

Finally enter the average weights during the year for billies, mature does and D2's. In addition enter the equivalent number of months during the year that animals are provided supplemental feed at levels meeting their maintenance energy needs. In other words, identify the amount of supplemental feed provided to each animal as measured by that animals' average monthly maintenance energy requirements. This is done for the billies, mature does and D2's present on the inventory date as well as for those to be purchased during the year. For example if each billy is provided supplemental feed meeting its maintenance energy requirements for two months during the year, enter (2) in the space provided for billies. If during the year following the inventory date, each purchased D2 is provided supplemental feed at one half its maintenance energy requirements for a period of three months, enter (1.5) in the space provided for purchased D2's.

If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed, this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

When you are ready to go on, select the More button. A second dialog like figure 4.64 will appear.

In Goat Grazing Demands Sec. 2 enter the average weights of D1's and D0's on the inventory date. Also enter the equivalent number of months that D1's, purchased D1's, D0's, purchased D0's, weaned replacement does, doe kids and wether kids are provided supplemental feed at levels meeting their maintenance energy needs during the year following the inventory date.

If does first kid at one year of age the text D0's and Purchased D0's will appear "grayed out", and their corresponding spaces should be ignored..

Also enter the equivalent number of months that retained doe feeder kids and retained wether feeder kids are provided supplemental feed at levels meeting their maintenance energy requirements between being weaned and being sold. For example if retained doe feeder kids are feed half their maintenance energy requirements for two months between when they enter the retained doe feeder kid enterprise at weaning and when they are later sold, enter (1).

Figure 4.64 Goat Grazing Demands Sec. 2

Finally in the lower box enter the months fed for the goats in each of the acquired feeder kid enterprises between when they are purchased and when they are sold.

If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed the spaces corresponding to D1's, D0's, weaned replacement does, kids and retained feeder kids will appear "grayed out." If feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed, questions for retained feeder kids and acquired feeder kids will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed, their corresponding spaces will be "grayed out." Ignore any "grayed out" areas.

All numbers entered in the Grazing dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

INVENTORY APPRAISAL

When you choose Inventory Appraisal in the Goats menu you will see a dialog like figure 4.65. The information provided in this dialog forms the basis by which Ranch Vision determines the value of the goat inventory at the beginning and end of each period. This is necessary when using accrual based accounting methods for the ranch business. For each type of goats listed enter the average market value per animal on the inventory date.

If the does kid at one year of age then D0's will be "grayed out"; if a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed then the spaces corresponding to billies, mature does, D2's, D1's, D0's, kids and retained feeder kids will appear "grayed out"; if the inventory was taken between weaning and kidding then the spaces for doe kids and wether kids will appear "grayed out"; if feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed, questions for retained feeder kids and acquired feeder kids will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed, their corresponding spaces will be "grayed out." Ignore any "grayed out" areas.

DIRECT COSTS

When you choose the Direct Costs menu item under the Goats menu, you are given a choice of two sub-menus, Simplified and Detailed. You may complete either. The Simplified sub-menu has a less detailed list of questions regarding doe- kid enterprise direct costs. However, completing the Detailed sub-menu may produce a more accurate projection. If you choose Simplified, you will first see a dialog like figure 4.66.

Enter the average expected direct costs that are paid in the form of cash for each breeding animal in the doe-kid enterprise for the year following the inventory. This could be calculated as the total of all doe-kid enterprise cash direct costs divided by the average total number of billies, mature does, D2's, D1's, D0's and weaned replacement does.

Next enter the average expected non-cash direct costs for each breeding animal in the doe-kid enterprise for the year following the inventory. This could be calculated as the total of all doe-kid enterprise non-cash direct costs, excluding the opportunity cost of investing in these goats which is automatically calculated and included by Ranch Vision, divided by the average total number of billies, mature does, D2's, D1's, D0's and weaned replacement does. (See Opportunity Costs, page 188).

Finally indicate if either the cash or non-cash direct costs listed include grazing fees for billies, D1's, D0's or weaned replacement does. Ranch Vision uses that information when calculating replacement doe costs. (See Replacement Costs, page 196).

If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed, this dialog will appear "grayed out" and should be ignored.

If instead of Simplified you chose the Detailed sub-menu, you would first see a dialog like figure 4.67. This dialog permits a detailed listing of the direct costs for the breeding animals within the doe-kid enterprise. First enter the average expected cash direct costs for each billy, mature doe, D2, D1, D0 and weaned replacement doe for the year following the inventory. This is calculated by dividing the cash direct costs for a particular type of goats during the year by the average number of that type of goats.

Secondly enter the average expected direct costs that are not paid in the form of cash for billies, mature does, D2's, D1's, D0's and weaned replacement does for the year following the inventory. This is calculated by dividing the non-cash direct costs for a particular type of goats during the year, excluding the opportunity cost of investing in these goats which is automatically calculated and included by Ranch Vision, by the average number of that type of goats. (See Opportunity Costs, page 188).

Finally for the billies, D1's, D0's and weaned replacement does indicate if either the cash or non-cash direct costs listed include grazing fees. Ranch Vision uses this information when calculating replacement doe costs. (See Replacement Costs, page 196).

If does first kid at one year of age the questions regarding D0's will appear "grayed out." If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed, this dialog will appear "grayed out." Ignore all "grayed out" areas. Ranch Vision calculates using the last Direct Costs sub-menu in which you selected the Done button.

Figure 4.68 Feeder Kid Enterprise Expenses

When you are ready to go on, choose the More button. A second dialog like figure 4.68 will appear. This dialog requests information about the direct costs for the various feeder kid enterprises. For each enterprise being analyzed enter the average expected cash direct costs per head during the time the goats are in that enterprise. Also enter the average expected non-cash direct costs per head, excluding the opportunity cost of investing in these goats which is automatically calculated and included by Ranch Vision, during the time the goats are in that enterprise. (See Opportunity Costs, page 188).

Finally indicate if either the cash or non-cash direct costs listed include grazing fees. Ranch Vision uses this information when calculating break-even values. (See Break-Even Values, page 42).

If a doe-kid enterprise is not being analyzed, then questions concerning retained feeder kids will appear "grayed out." If acquired feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed then questions concerning acquired feeder kids will appear "grayed out." If feeder kid enterprises are not being analyzed this entire dialog will appear "grayed out." Please ignore all "grayed out" questions.

All numbers entered in the Direct Costs dialogs should be greater than or equal to zero.

If you wish to cancel changes made to the dialog screen choose Cancel, and the questions will return to their previous answers. When you have answered all of the relevant questions in each of the dialogs select the Done buttons. You will then return to the main menu.
